Hello Kate:

We saw mvme5500 boards overheat in open laboratory crates
or when on extender cards, meaning they were out in the open
without any forced air cooling.
For MVME2100 that was OK, but the 5500 dies.

The 5500 was also getting quite hot in VXI crates
where the cooling was previously dialed down to reduce
noise.

They seem fine in ordinary VME creates,
Agree. The backplane of the VME crate is less compact
as compared with other kind of crates such as VME64x.
I suspect that the overheating of the mvme6100 will not
happen in a standard VME crate, which would
simplify the problem if those extra pins
and features from the VME64x crate are not needed.

Cheers,
Kate
also in our
VXI crates when the fans are running full speed.

Kay

At SNS, we updated from the MVME2100 to the MVME5500.
The 2100 runs forever without added cooling on extender boards
in open crates in laboratory setups.
The 5500 needs forced cooling right across its heat sinks;
it will otherwise soon overheat.
I am surprised that the mvme5500 overheated. Did you use
a regular VME crate or a VME64x crate with the mvme5500
board ? So far, we do not have the overheating problem
on our mvme5500 boards.
