As I said in my original message, this initiative is not about trying to 
denigrate or replace CSS at all, it has been an excellent framework and is 
being used very successfully at a number of facilities.  It would not be 
helpful for the development of our community to publish negative comments 
about CSS, and I think we have enough development effort available to support 
more than one toolkit.

The number of responses here have shown there is a lot of interest in having 
alternative tools available which don't need a JVM and the Eclipse environment 
to be installed and thus have a smaller footprint.  I suspect the resulting 
tools may be less inter-operable than using CSS because there is no framework 
to provide the higher-level coordination that CSS can supply, but that is a 
trade-off that some sites will be willing to accept while others will prefer 
the more integrated experience of CSS.
