As Ian Gillingham mentioned in his post, at Diamond we current use EDM panels for our operator interfaces to accelerator and beamline systems.

However we are looking to replace EDM/motif and are likely to be evaluating the choice of replacement technology in the near future. Currently I am the engineer scheduled to perform the evaluation and likely also to do the work.

No decision has been taken yet on the choice, but one of the candidates is CSS/BOY. Another suggestion would be a QT-based solution, with a number of engineers already having solutions in parallel with the current EDM panels.

A key factor in the choice of technology will be finding other institutions to collaborate with in its development, support and maintenance. QT seems to be a popular technology within the EPICS community but users have tended to each create their own solutions. QT is popular with engineers at Diamond as well, but the current lack of a coordinated development would count against it as the replacement for EDM. An EPICS QT collaboration would be very interesting as it would make QT a much more viable candidate.

A second key factor will be a migration path from the existing EDM technology to its replacement. Ideally we would need a utility to convert existing edl files to their replacements. It's very interesting to hear from Jane that TRIUMF has similar considerations.

In short, we are very interested in the possibility of an EPICS QT collaboration, although we don't know what technology we will go with for the panel replacements and this choice would obviously affect whether or not we would be able to contribute to such a project. On the other hand the existence of a collaboration may affect the choice we make.

Regards,

Dave.
