In case anyone is interested.  I've been using the aravis based driver with some prosilica GC cameras at NSLSII for several months.  It worked for me right out of the box.  Also, the aravis library comes with a nice command line tool which was useful for testing.

The only features lacking in aravis are connection by IP address (as opposed to broadcast), and support for the (AVT specific) protocol extension to set the camera's IP address.
