1. I am interested, how to properly set up the connection properties. I would like to have a soft IOC running on a laptop and access PVs on two more computers (clients) as well as on the laptop. I have also some instruments (a PLC and an oscillograph) with the Ethernet interface. Do all my Ethernet devices have to be in one subnet? Like this: Laptop (RHEL 5.5): 192.168.0.1 PC 1 (Win XP sp3): 192.168.0.2 PC 2 (Win XP sp2): 192.168.0.3 PLC (Siemens 317-2 PN/DP): 192.168.0.4 Oscilloscope (Tektronix): 192.168.0.5 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 My IOC is running under RHEL 5.5 (linux-x86) on the VMware virtual machine with a Bridged setting on (PC1). Everything is connected with the help of a MOXA switch ("star-connection"). Later on I will add a Wifi router - so I could access PVs over wifi from another laptop (laptop2). For the time being, I want to use CSS as a client. So, I would like to know how to setup connection properties on the server as well as on the clients (so everything will work either using css or caget, caput, camonitor). It's a little bit confusing, though I have read CA reference manual, there is no simple tutorial nor a helloworld sample :)) 2. I am also interested about how to configure my own clients in the future. Can I use simple caget, caput, camonitor on client PCs in the meantime? Do these programs require base installed? What if a computer doesn't have base installed? Can I still access PVs through CSS or my own programed clients (using CAJ, Perl, C)? I wish the EPICS community to get bigger and to make progress in the following year.
