Maybe not. The idea was that if you want the full functionality,
you can open the real thing as you mention in step 2.

The macro replacement works for the *.plt file name, but as you noted not
for the PVs. I'll fix that.

When sending a PV to a D.B. via the context menu, I find it hard to
determine which of the existing ones you meant to use as a target.

>From many places that support drag & drop you can drag a PV into an existing
data browser:
Drag PV from outside of CSS,
drag PV from archive search view, etc.

So use drag & drop. If the place you want to drag _from_ doesn't support
drag and drop, that would be the thing to look at for a possible future
extension.
