Hi,
thanks to all for your replies. We have used encoders and LVDTs in
prototypes for other machines (XFEL, mainly) where the environment is
not so harsh.
As for the LVDTs vs potentiometers debate, we contacted people at CERN
who used LVDTs for the LHC collimators. It seems that magnetic fields
can affect LVDTs (1) and we will have a 10 mT field in the scraper area.
That's why we think that potentiometers can be the right choice: no
electronics, simple and robust (it also helped checking Tech-talk
previous threads :) )
In any case, hints and remarks are most welcome.
Thanks again,
Eduardo
