Hi Martin,
For network monitoring, we use an in house developed suite by SLAC network team, called ptolemy, that basically collects snmp info from our routers, switches and other networking devices. Information includes device names and ports, cam (mac address) tables, arp entries, network traffic and errors, and etc. This is all dumped into a mysql database, presented on web via all kinds of graphs.
For controls computing monitoring, we use a EPICS based UnixWatchDog (UWD), developed in our group, to monitor system resources, performances, and processes. The UWD basically include a softIOC, processes running on each system to collect system info and writting to the softIOC, and a EPICS Alarm to display, alarm and send messages out to responsible persons. This UWD, in combination with ptolemy (our network monitoring), has been working well for us in SLAC, but I found it not easily scalable, e.g., when I want to extend to monitor functionalities of a control's process and its dependences. It is in my plan to create a controls infrastructure monitoring, based on Nagios.
Cheers,
Jingchen

Subject: Controls Network Monitoring Tools
Hello,
We are in process of installing new single mode fiber optics cable in our LANSCE User Facility and
have the
opportunity to invest in some network monitoring soft and hardware.
So, I was wondering what people are using to monitor their fiber and twisted pair controls network
from the switch and
router level all the way down to the device level?
What are the pros and cons of that system?
Any feedback is appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Martin
