Although one can consider "IT" and the controls systems separate, there
are some interesting intersections possible.

We use nagios3 and munin for much standard network and system monitoring.

However, it is possible (and I am working more on this) to use EPICS to
interface with munin to monitor and control.

Munin-nodes utilize plugins to generate the data, which are easily
accessible using stream device and a simple "fetch <plugin-name>" to get
the numerical data.

but wait, there's more.

Since munin plugins are simply scripts, actions on the munin-node can be
performed, so the plugin can act as an RPC service, accessed via CA.

So, for example, one could easily start and restart services (such as
IOCs) using a munin plugin over CA.
