Some thoughts...
We utilize several tools to monitor the network, with data primarily obtained via SNMP and sFlow. SNMP support is ubiquitous on most network hardware beyond the cheapest consumer-grade switches. Open source tools like Cacti (with add-on modules) poll network devices and display port statistics, load, MAC address tables, etc..
Pros include an easy to set-up canned interface and all the features available with Apache (proxy, authentication, etc.) for external access.

For EPICS integration, as Greg mentioned, I advocate creating a softIOC with SNMP driver as a component of your monitoring solution to ensure data can be captured and archived along with the process data.
Cons are cumbersome display creation and limitations with SNMP driver in its current implementation - a lack of SNMP v3 support (AFAIK) may be a security issue at your organization.

For more detailed traffic inspection look to see if your network gear supports Netflow (Cisco, et al.) or sFlow (Juniper, et al.). This will provide insight of the protocols running over your link in real time. Free tools to look at are sFlowtools and NTOP. Worthy commercial solutions I've tried are Brocade Network Advisor (BNA) and Fluke Netflow Analyzer.

Hello,

We are in process of installing new single mode fiber optics cable in our LANSCE User Facility and
have the
opportunity to invest in some network monitoring soft and hardware.

So, I was wondering what people are using to monitor their fiber and twisted pair controls network
from the switch and
router level all the way down to the device level?

What are the pros and cons of that system?

Any feedback is appreciated!
