Hello All,

Some status, in case some of you might have heard news about the recent
forest fire close to LANL and the town of Los Alamos. Initially the
situation was less than certain considering the fire's appalling initial
expansion from 0 to 161 square kilometers in only one day. This is the
second forest fire (only ten years apart) where the entire town has been
evacuated. We are thankful for the considerable diligence of firefighting
crews, and therefore happy to report that there was no damage to LANSCE,
LANL, or Los Alamos. Our Ski Area _was_ damaged, but the good news is that
ski lifts are repairable, and that there is still enough forest coverage to
shade the snow from the intense New Mexico sun on a majority of the ski
runs. We are grateful for this because forests take a very long time to
recover here. During the evacuation, there was in fact a one acre fire at
LANSCE which was quickly extinguished, but it turns out that this was
unrelated to the forest fire, and was later determined to be caused by a
ill-fated squirrel coming in contact with a high voltage transformer. We
hope to have LASNCE back in an operational state in the next few days as we
recover from the power outage.

Jeff
