Sorry, I lied about that. On my test machine running in 32-bit mode, unless I
explicitly tell it to build for -arch i386 gcc generates a 64-bit executable,
which the 32-bit MacOS X kernel is perfectly happy to run.
If I specify -arch i386 for gcc, my program does print 32.
