It depends - it's good practice not to.

When I was in Australia we put some similar devices - IP based temperature monitors (I'm familiar with the Moxa product range - these were cheaper but similar electronics) in a tunnel. They were housed in metal boxes on pedestals under the storage ring. It does depend on the energy of the ring too - The AS is a 3 Gev machine. Some shielding is probably useful - but what I suspect killed them in the
end was high temperature. It took about 12-58 months and they all failed from what seemed like corruptions in the firmware. We replaced them - and made sure the environment was cooler. My colleagues back in Oz might like to comment on their life since them (Bryce - the ITMS or MITMs?). I would not like to put anything in a higher energy machine - I've been warned off anything here at the APS.

The energy in the Linac is typically much lower and you might be able to get away more there. Also, make sure you don't use fibre optics too. That will darken.

If you are contemplating Moxa's, then they will be talking to something serial - so you might want to think about the life of that device also. Judging from the filter wheel you mention I'm assuming it's a camera - you probably need to consider the camera disposable - you are probably going to void the warranty anyway!

So, in summary avoid if you can. If you must, make sure you don't mind too much if it doesn't last long (cost) and it could fail in service.

Hope this helps

Subject: radiation damage to electronics inside accelerator tunnel?

Hello All,

Did anyone have experience putting electronics, especially Moxa NPort
5110[1] and IFW Intelligent Filter Wheel[2], inside accelerator(Linac,
Booster, Storage Ring) tunnel? Any shielding required?

Thanks,

Yong
