Hi:

At the SNS, we're not using 64 bit Linux, so no effort is made to test our
CSS products on 64 bit.

Fundamentally, though, it seems to run when I quickly try it on a machine
that happens to be 64 bit.

uname -a
Linux ics-srv-epics1.ics.sns.gov 2.6.9-89.0.19.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Dec 30
12:52:55 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

java -version
java version "1.6.0_19"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_19-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 16.2-b04, mixed mode)

CSS 2.2.0 starts up OK.

The Channel Access library plugin does NOT contain 64 bit binaries, so you
will have to use the pure java CAJ version (CSS, Preferences, ..., EPICS,
...).

When you cannot launch CSS at all, try to run it like this:

  css -consoleLog

There should be some error related to wrong Java version.
You will have to use a Sun/Oracle Java, not the GNU java compiler.

You can also try

   css -consoleLog -vmargs -d32

to actually use the 32 bit version of Java.

Thanks,
Kay
