Hi, Gary.
One variant on your first choice: If you're trying to install everything
into its own tree (e.g. /opt/epics-base-3.14.11) using the method you
mentioned of building in the install tree, you could avoid building as
root by temporarily changing the owner of the install tree to be the
user for the build. Perform the build as that user, delete the sources,
then change the owner back to root.
