Title: Upcoming EPICS meeting - Oct 11 - 15 @ Brookhaven
More to follow. The website should be available within one week.
Please register early - even if you are only considering joining us. This allows us to get all visitor passes through the system in time. We need 45 days in the worst case. If you could express your interest by registering, it would also give us an idea of how many people to expect.
Please submit topics for the EPICS meeting. All submissions are interesting.
Some specific areas of interest are:
Archiving - what is your site doing? Experience using these archivers - performance, reliability, hardware used.
Instruments as IOCs - anyone employing these that have measured the impact on the network? On the clients that connect to many of these instruments? Are you employing gateways to consolidate the signals or are all clients connecting to each one?
Automatic test / regression testing / validating EPICS database/drivers?
Open Source Hardware solutions. We will present hardware that we are developing and intend to make available to the community. If there are any other groups working in toward these ends, it would be interesting to see the approach, the function, the applicability to other problems.
CSS base tools will be covered in one session. Are there any users of these tools that would like to present their experiences?
Version 4 of EPICS has made some large steps in the definition of an expanded data set. The goal of these extensions is to enable the development of servers that provide larger sets of data. It would be very interesting to have presentations on some of the tools that currently live above EPICS: such as MMLT, SDDS, XAL, MDS+, GDA - with an eye toward evaluating the v4 data types? Are there telescope tools for image acquisition and analysis that could also be presented?
After the EPICS meeting, a workshop is planned to present some new services that use version 4, that may provide some new functionality that allow these applications to spin off some functions as remote clients. There is also a workshop planned for experimental control using GDA. Is there interest in providing a 4 hour workshop on any of these other packages? The workshops are being held after the EPICS meeting on Thursday and Friday.
Any new tools being developed in Java? Python?
New hardware solutions to difficult problems? There will be a timing workshop mainly focused on the micro research timing - being held the friday before the EPICS meeting. That is Oct 9th. This will feature new drivers to support standard EPICS records, new event generator interfaces to support standard record sets and a client that allows viewing and editing timing. This will also cover general time issues. Anyone that has contributions to this topic should please join us.
