"devGpib" is a bit of a historical artifact. The device support provided by that module can communicate with devices using GPIB, serial ports or ethernet (raw TCP or VXI-11). For example, the Tektronix TDS-3000 oscilloscope support has been used to communicate with these scopes using:
A local GPIB interface (NI-1014)
A LAN/GPIB adapter
A local serial port
A LAN/RS-232 adapters
A direct network connection
