My mistake. I wasn't setting EPICS_CA_MAX_ARRAY_BYTES correctly on the IOC and was wrong about caget working (the error message was buried by lots of zeros).

Thanks for the reality check.

I can use labCA (version labca_3_1) to get large arrays.
