It worked after building base 3.14.10 and areaDetector 1-5 from scratch.
My guess, the old base was not built on that machine but copied from
some other Linux box.
Summary for a record:
1. Followed email from Mark Rivers to check the marccd version and
software date. The marccd remote server was old. Downloaded and
updated. Still crashing.
2. Followed instruction from Mark to save the core dump. Also found
the marccdApp works fine if started by gdb.
3. Confirmed by Mark that base should be rebuilt.
4. downloaded base 3.14.10 and modules needed for areaDetector 1-5.
5. It worked after standard EPICS customization for site and build. I
can collect diffraction images through MEDM.
I did not spent time to really pinpoint the real cause of crash.
Thanks again for very prompt help from Mark Rivers.

That stack trace is very useful. I don't see anything from areaDetector
in the stack trace, it looks like a thread that is just using EPICS
base. I think it is a good idea to rebuild everything as you suggested.
