I don't see what the disadvantage is of building the universal binary. Actually, the Darwin universal 32/64 universal build is more flexible than either the 32 or 64 builds alone. You can build the core EPICS libraries using the universal 32/64 and then you can build any other dependent tool in 32, 64 or 32/64 universal build as long as you maintain the darwin-x86 convention throughout.

If the problem is that a particular application isn't 64 bit compatible, then that is a problem with that application's support for 64 bit builds and not the universal build system.
