Subject: Successful LCLS Project Wishes to Thank the EPICS and RTEMS Community

In October 2009 the Linac Coherent Light Source Project (LCLS) at SLAC
passed a major milestone in delivering beam to the first of many
scheduled user experiments. The success story was all the more
meaningful because of the flawless running of the facility with an
uptime comparable to any storage ring light source. This is due in no
small part to the modern control system that was built up and
commissioned as part of the Project. Many years ago planners had to be
convinced to allow us to migrate from the old SLAC controls to an EPICS
and RTEMS based system, a decision which has clearly paid off. SLAC now
leads the way in many areas of real time processing, fast, synchronous
data acquisition and feedback control, for which we owe the community at
large a debt of gratitude for sharing their expertise and knowledge.
Controls engineering has risen to a new prominence with LCLS at SLAC.
The lead accelerator physicist for LCLS, Paul Emma, was quoted at the
FEL Conference this year as saying that 80% of the project's
commissioning effort was focused on the Controls System.
Headlines at SLAC are dominated by exciting new physics results achieved
with the world's first hard x-ray free electron laser: such as being
able to produce and study new exotic states of matter like "naked ions"
for the first time, fully stripped Neon 10+. But the engineers at SLAC
are also celebrating the technical success and looking forward to rising
to the challenge of creating an even greater arsenal of precision
real-time controls for operating the LCLS in new configurations to meet
the demands of many new experiments.
