I should have mentioned it, but we need to use R3.14.8.2 for the moment.

I also remembered something on the exploder, but couldn't find it before
my first post. I think I have just found it
(http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/tech-talk/2008/msg00451.php) and Andrew
says "Once epicsThreadExitMain() has been used the proper way to
actually close an IOC down is for one of the remaining threads to call
epicsExit(), which shuts down the other threads and calls exit()." He
suggests loading softIocExit.db and doing a caput to its $(IOC):exit PV.

So that is another option. I still like the idea of a call pending on a
semaphore until a signal arrives. It avoids the confusion surrounding
softIocs apparently being zombies, when they are actually running
perfectly happily. I feel Linux processes should terminate when sent a
SIGTERM, and softIoc's without a shell don't seem to (but maybe that's
fixed now with the recent changes to the signal handling).

Cheers
