Staff: High level controls engineer

The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and the
Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University (MSU) is
searching for an experienced High Level Controls Engineer to support
the laboratory’s growing requirements. The successful candidate will
serve as the key person in developing man-machine interface software
for the higher level controls of ion sources, beam lines and
accelerator structures. Appointment level in the NSCL Continuing
Appointment system will be based on experience.
Responsibilities:
• Recommends human management interface approach and seeks
  solutions to improve the laboratory
• Shapes the controls environment and leads the development in high level
  controls
• Develops software and software activity coordination in a scientific
  research environment
• Works with software in real-time processing, distributed control
  applications, graphical user interfaces, computer graphics, scientific
  visualization and test plan development
• Collaborates with the scientific community to coordinate integration,
  development and maintenance of software
• Maintains high application programming, which may include beam
  diagnostics, such as BPMs or particle detectors, low level RF-
controls, controls of ion source systems and of beam optics components
• Makes key choices with a high-level of technical knowledge and subject
  matter expertise
• Recommends the Human Management Interface Approach and utilizes
  state of the art industry best practices
• Uses an EPICS based system
• Provides leadership to a group in this scope of work and ensures
  transition to a starter system
Required Experience:
A minimum of five years of experience designing and shaping future
control systems is required. The desired candidate should be familiar
with software such as Linux, Experimental Physics and Industrial
Control System (EPICS), C/C++, JAVA, MATLAB and IRMIS.
The primary working hours will be for normal daytime shifts.
Required Education:
Knowledge normally acquired by completing master’s degree program in
Physics is required. A PhD in Physics or Electronic Controls is
desired.
Travel time is less than 10%.

About NSCL:
MSU, located in East Lansing Michigan, is the nation’s eighth-largest
university and has been selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE)
to design and establish the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a
future DOE Office of Science national user facility. FRIB will take
about a decade to build, cost approximately $550 million dollars and
adjoins the current National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory
(NSCL). NSCL is funded under a cooperative agreement with the U.S.
National Science Foundation and will continue its mission over the
