Dear colleagues in the EPICS Community,

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) The world's brightest X-ray source sprang to life last week at SLAC.

As John Galayda the LCLS Construction Project Director commented, "This is the most difficult lightsource that has ever been turned on. It's on the boundary between the impossible and possible, and within two hours of start-up these guys had it right on."

Initial tests produced laser light with a wavelength of 1.5 Angstroms, or 0.15 nanometers-the shortest-wavelength, highest-energy X-rays ever created by any laser. After fine tuning, it will offer the world's brightest, shortest pulses of laser X-rays for scientific study. The first experiments are scheduled for September 2009.

The controls system is of course EPICS and has of course been pivotal in making this achievement possible. Many new and ground breaking controls subsystems had to be developed to enable this accomplishment. You will be hearing about these in upcoming meetings and conferences from the heroic Controls Group which made it all possible.

This is also another success for the EPICS community and a further validation of its vitality. Thank you all for your contributions.
