Subject: Console access and managing soft IOCs

Hi,

I've been reading over old tech-talk messages about conserver and
procServ.

Currently at Diamond we are making use of conserver to log and provide
access to terminal server ports. We use the Cyclades AlterPath ACS32 to
provide console access to our VME IOCs.

We'd like to start logging and providing better console access to our
soft IOCs (especially since we are increasing our use of soft IOCs).

As I understand it this would be possible using conserver with screen,
and it seems fairly flexible and straight forward to use.

However, I get the impression that using procServ as the soft IOC
'screen' layer is more reliable, and is the preferred way. So the soft
IOC layers would be:

IOC
procServ
conserver

Then we have conserver as the unified console interface for both VME
IOCs and soft IOCs. procServ also then gives us the added benefit of
process management.

Regarding MS Windows IOCs. Has anyone tried running screen or procServ
under Cygwin?

Does anybody have any recommendations in this area? Or experience that
would be worth sharing?

As an aside, has anyone starting to use event correlators to process IOC
log files?
(eg. http://www.estpak.ee/~risto/sec/)

I would be interested in using such a system to identify failed reboots,
failed card configuration, serious error messages, etc.

Cheers,
Matthew
