When you say that you want to 'keep the motor moving all the time for
several months," there are a couple ways that might be interpreted. One
is that the motor will continue to rotate in the same direction without
stopping for months. Another interpretation is that the motor will
remain under power for several months and occasionally be commanded to
move within a specific and limited range of steps. (This latter case is
very typical for our use of stepper motors.)
Which case is yours?
Perhaps if you have the first case (such as a sample spinner), a stepper
motor might not be the best solution.

To run the stepper for this long you could also connect a
function generator's square wave output to the step input
of your driver.
