Another example is after a complete power cycle. Any stepper motors
operating in micro/half stepping mode will fall back to their nearest
full step. Or, when the drive amplifier is turned back on, a motor may
move slightly (for example a high current servo motor). It depends on
the application whether or not these matter when the position is
autosaved restored.
