I've used several types in the Water system here, with various degrees
of success.
The Moxa NPORT series works great, and I've never had problems with
them. Also there are a set of devices from a company called SENA that
I've used successfully for quite a while.
I've used the DIGI units as well, and have had no significant problems
with them, with the possible exception of the DIGI-1 unit, which does
MODBUS/TCP, but sometimes has problems with my EPICS configuration. In
addition, I've used the Schneider Automation CE174 units successfully,
as long as you don't have too many host units attempting to link to it
(it has a limit of 8 concurrent links).
The versions I have used of all of these units are all single port.
Personally I most like the MOXA NPort IA5150-M-SC of which I have
several in the field. These are single port units that go directly from
100BaseFX to RS-232/ RS-485 in a single shot. They save quite a bit of
complexity in the hardware setup in the field.

Question: are you asking about terminal servers?
We have a bunch of Emulex terminal servers in use, for years already,
and with hardly any problems (occasional port hangups + ports losing
a setting or so, mostly after power failures).
