Kelvin,

Fedora dropped openmotif in Fedora Core 6 and replaced it with lesstif.  With Fedora Core 6, it works to uninstall lesstif and install  "openmotif-2.3.0-0.1.9.2.i386.rpm" and "openmotif-devel-2.3.0-0.1.9.2.i386.rpm" from Fedora Core 5.  I have no problems with Linux or EPICS code using Fedora 6 and openmotif from Core 5.  Also installing openmotif from tar zipped files should also work.  Using openmotif from Core 5 was just simply easier.

What I have found since Fedora Core 6, newer versions (and mainly based on Fedora 7) Fedora becomes extremely difficult replace lesstif with openmotif.  More and more, the newer Fedora versions are becoming dependant on lesstif.  Removing lesstif cause more things to not work (or not work correctly).
But even more important in the EPICS world, it becomes harder to get EPICS code to work.  Openmotif is supported by EPICS code. Lesstif is not supported by EPICS code and this has been stated by developers that their management does not permit support of lesstif.

In summary, it is my belief that Fedora Core 6 is the last Fedora OS that is usable by EPICs code.  I must use at least Fedora Core 4 since I have RAID disk controllers.  I have been unable to use Fedora 7, 8, & 9.
I only had one problem with Fedora 6.  I could not get XDMCP to work with remote X-terminals which I need to Quadruple my display into four separate windows on remote displays.  This problem can be overcame by either using Jupiter Fusion 730 Wall Display Controllers or more cheaply by using Windows XP and X-display Manager software X-Win32 version 8.2 (used).

Actually, I am hoping someone can prove me wrong, since I like and want to use Fedora.  Hope to hear a Fedora positive reply.

Thanks,
