The WIKI (I know, its only 3.13, but it's all there is right now)
implies that StringIn and StringOut support soft devices only.

If I write si and so support into my driver, can I read strings using
it? I need to read an identification string from a PLC, and it is
returned "as a string". Also, I need to read/write information to a
group of Cutler-Hammer devices, which use IMPACC communications, that is
based on 6 byte strings. Would be a great advantage if I could directly
access them.

Now that we're actually starting to get serious about EPICS, I've got
people crawling all over the place wanting access to information in the
remotes, and wanting to get trained on EPICS. Andrew, you really need
to get the guys to fix the website so the softTV training videos are
available. I get intermittent connection errors when I try to open the
RealVideo streams. Sometimes it works ...for a while..., sometimes it
doesn't.
