Well I don't know where Mac Port puts the files so if they are not in
/sw/lib then yes, that would be part of the problem. However I did just
modify the SDDS/gd/Makefile.OAG file so that gd can now be built with
SHARED_LIBRARIES=YES turned on which I believe you have. I have not
tested building with shared libraries in a very long time so that is how
the problem found its way in. Basically I just removed the Xpm reference
in the Makefile when OS_CLASS=Darwin. This library is not needed to
build gd on OSX.
Note that if you change SDDS/Makefile to locate the Mac Port libraries
you will want to delete the extensions/lib/darwin-ppc/libgd.* and
extensions/lib/darwin-ppc/libpng.* files because they will be used if no
matter what if they exist.

Now, when I used Mac Ports (switched from Fink to try it out) to
install Xpm it get the error message:

Activating xpm 3.4k_0

Error: Target org.macports.activate returned: Image error:
/usr/X11/bin/cxpm already exists and does not belong to a registered
port. Unable to activate port xpm.

Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.

Naturally my question is how I get SDDS to build?

My ultimate goal is to get the VLinac to run on my machine. It is
really a great way to test if everything is working and to try out
new things.
