At the NSLS II, we have no experience nor have we broken ground.
However, we are working with LBL to develop an embedded device controller framework that provides a communication network that is synchronized to the timing and provides the infrastructure to do fast orbit feedback, machine protection, longitudinal feedback, and synchronized data acquisition. Our goal is to communicate around 200 BPM signals to 100 fast correctors and computing the corrections within 20 usecs. The framework supports inputs from the RF for synchronization. The goal is to create a device control framework that can be embedded into any device controller for under $100 US, and to have cell controllers that marshall information from the device controllers and communicate between cells for under $1,000 US. The cell controllers will have the interface to an EPICS IOC. We're looking for co-developers of device controllers and some help with the FPGA programming.
