Hello Stephanie,

note that Conserver is one layer above: It does logging and user/connection management for an arbitrary number of serial-type connections, so its main purpose is to unify access and logging for our soft and VME IOCs.

On the lower level, we use different types of terminal servers (console servers) to access VME based IOCs and the screen utility for soft IOCs. We're not doing much different things under the hood.

We don't particularily notice IOCs freezing because of screen scrolling, but we are annoyed by the vt100 commands that the screen client sends up to the Conserver - which Conserver puts into the log files and which just don't look nice.

So - replacing screen with something more appropriate would be very interesting for us, too.

We would still use and recommend Conserver as the integration layer on top, that makes accessing any soft or VME IOC as easy as typing
console <iocname>
on a machine that has the console program (Conserver client) available.

Hi Marco,

I see this failure when the soft ioc failed to start. There are other system-related reasons.

Currently, the LCLS group at SLAC is changing to no longer start soft IOCs using the SLAC version of iocConsole and instead will use something called procServ - Ernest can give details. Apparently, the soft IOC can freeze while somebody is paging up and down inside of screen - I've not reproduced it and debugged it though. I also see that Ralph Lange uses something called conServer which looks interesting:

Sorry I cannot be more help,
