I was at an LXI seminar put on by Agilent last year. I tried very
hard to get a description of the details of the actual protocol on
the network. The seminar leaders kept on saying that they had VISA
drivers and that I should use that. I pointed out that this did not
fit well into EPICS but that did not seem to matter much.
The LXI documentation does specify VXI-11 compatibility, and EPICS
does have VXI-11 drivers in ASYN, but I know from experience that
this is sometimes not enough. For example, we've been unable to get
a Tektronix 3000-series oscilloscope to initiate SRQ operations and
Tektronix won't provide the information we need ("we supply a VISA
driver -- use that"). Marty Kraimer had long and ultimately
fruitless conversations with various Tektronix representatives on
this subject.
