Hi,
It's certainly possible to develop large projects using more than IDE
(we used Eclipse and Jbuilder). In the end it was down to personal
preference as to which one was used. Both Eclipse and Netbeans support
Ant.
The built-in GUI builder in Netbeans is very good. I think Netbeans also
has better support for J2EE projects.
However, I mainly used Eclipse. It might be more customisable in the
long term... Custom EPICS view??
Java plotting libraries are changing all the time. If a particular one
is chosen it may be wise to maintain an 'EPICS version' of that library.
This would also allow for customisation relevant for Epics client
applications.
Regards,
Matthew

Hi,
It's not looking to me like anyone in the free IDE category is going to
clearly win. Both Eclipse and NetBeans have ardent followers. It does
look like the EPICS community is leaning towards Eclipse from what I can
see, though.
But regardless of which IDE you use, any (java) project one creates
should be buildable outside the IDE using Ant. This is actively
supported and encouraged for Eclipse. You just need to put in a small
effort to create a build.xml file along with your project. This allows a
developer to use whatever IDE they choose (or none, for emacs types such
as myself). Projects that use Ant build.xml are naturally portable
across IDE.
