You can make the alarm handler issue any command.
We use it to send email, e.g.

$STATCOMMAND HIGH echo "CGS4 erray temp. exceeds 34K" | mail -s "CGS4
array temp. exceeds 34K" maren-cgs4

but you can of course just as well make it play sound files.
