MEDM supports animated GIFs, where the particular frame shown is
selected by a PV. In fact you can use a Visibility PV on most widget
types to control when the widget is visible or not, and then pile
several different sets of widgets on top of each other with different
visibility settings.
EDM can do the visibility thing, and also supports a way of defining
your own symbols which provide a way to show an object in a number of
different states, selecting between the states by a PV again. This is
probably easier to do than the visibility approach, once you understand
how to create the symbol object.
