I asked a similar question here a year or two ago. The suggestions I was
given (both on-list and off) were to just use the waveform record, i.e.
use the read_wf for your "write" routine. As I understand, the waveout
record is just a modified waveform record, but it doesn't seem to have any
official support or a named maintainer unlike the waveform record which is
part of base.
