I had the (perhaps false) impression that mca was more widely used but seems to be currently without official support.

I think you're right about the support. I use mca here at the SNS, and recently merged changes that Steven Banks (Australian Synch.) emailed. See http://ics-web1.sns.ornl.gov/~kasemir/mca .

But I don't think anybody is 100% familar with the sources
and has time to fix everything. Issues I know about:
- There are no unit tests for anything.
- I observed an occasional "No channel exists for this handle." error,
  but it's not reproducible.
- Occasionally, Matlab crashes on exit after having used MCA.
  (Dirk Zimoch reported seeing this a lot).
For me, it still works well enough to be of a lot of use.
