Kay,
Where did you find this:
"Product name This text string may represent a short description
of the product/product family represented by the product code in
attribute 3. The same product code may have a variety of product
name strings. The maximum number of 8-bit characters in this
string shall be 32. Each of the characters shall be in the range
0x20 to 0x7E."
I just spent time unsuccessfully searching the web for
documentation on the Identity Object.
John
In "ControlNet Specifications, Release 2.0, Errata 2".
Part 10 has the "ControlNet Object Library",
of which the "Identity Object", class code 0x01, is the first one,
attribute 7 of which being a SHORT_STRING product name,
and table 10.3 gives its semantics, from which I copied.
How does one get a copy of the specifications?
Good question.
At one point, one could go to www.odva.org and download it.
Then, one had to pay for it.
I happened to get a copy on CD-ROM from a colleague at LANL
who originally looked at ControlLogix IOCs for the SNS
project, and he had attended a seminar about the introduction
of ControlNet-Over-Ethernet, as it was called at the time,
where attendees got the CD.
Those specs mention the EtherNet encapsulation of ControlNet
only in an appendix.
It was then renamed into "EtherNet/IP" (for "Industrial Protocol"),
and that's what you now see on the odva web page.
Looks like that right now they offer a paid subscription to the
specifications,
no free download,
and 'CIP' has again been renamed, this time from "Control and
Information Protocol"
to "Common Industrial Protocol".
