Hi,

Dear All,

We are using ELOG from http://midas.psi.ch/elog/index.html and would like to be able to have an IOC make automated e-log entries. This particular package comes with source code for a command line tool for making entries and I assume this can be easily adapted to the task at hand.

I am wondering if others have done similar things and if they have any advice.

It seems non-trivial to manipulate lengthy strings in an IOC (use waveform record?) so I was thinking it might be easier to create device support that reads in a file of pre-canned messages on start-up and then have an output record pass to device support an index to one of these messages.

However I can also think of other ways to do this, e.g. an external script that monitors a particular record via Channel Access and does the appropriate things when it sees a change.

Just for your information.
We use our home grown electric lognote sytem, which we call zLog, togather with a python script correcting events from EPICS system and
putting messages into backent RDB, postgreSQL.
This srcipt is running as a background process on our server unix machine. It monitors channels in the configuration file and put a record inluding pre-defiend message into the database running on other unix server over the network. Once the record is put into the database,
user can view and edit the record from a web browser.

It is a rather simple program but quite useful for us.

Btw, this script is written by a member of the KEKB operators group.

I am open to ideas. Thanks,
