At the CLS we have generally standardised on 3-wire RTD sensors for most
temperature measurements. For low-speed and high-resolution monitoring
we use National Instruments FieldPoint. We have some thermocouples in
older parts of the facility also using FieldPoint. The driver also
supports Relay, Digital and +/- 5V modules.
The EPICS RS-232 driver for FieldPoint was written about five to six
years ago and pre-date the existing of ASYN. They are built on a
generic RS-232 driver library that supports RTEMS and Linux based IOCs.
We need higher speed or fast closed loop control we use PLCs or VME
cards.

Controls experts,
In the undulator hall of the LCLS we expect to monitor (what I consider)
a large number of temperature points (on the order of about 300). My
past experience with thermocouples has been local installations of
between one and eight data points. It would be easy to just scale that
solution by a factor of 40, but I have to believe there are more cost
effective solutions.
Can anyone with experience in this regard please point me in the right
direction? I'm looking for hardware that is, of course, EPICS compliant.
