I built and used EPICS base and many of the extensions on Alphas
(DECUnix/Tru64). There were a few issues with older extensions that were
coded assuming pointer=int=long, mostly easily fixed.

Properly written X/Motif applications should not be a problem, as X and
Motif were designed to be architecture/word-size independent.

I even tried to build XView (for the old archiver) from source, without
success. Some poking around on the net turned up an Alpha port which
worked.

I was using the native DEC compilers. GCC generally worked also, but the
DEC compiler was faster and tended to generate more compact code. I never
tested whether it ran faster or not.
