How complex is this application? Is it really less effort to port EPICS to another open-source RTOS than to convert a single application? Is there some other advantage of eCOS over RTEMS? Diversity is good, but I worry about dilution of resources.

my $0.02, going in the same direction as Eric, with some anectdotal evidence:

- we still boot our iocs (vxWorks) from a solaris machine, even if we don't use solaris for much else anymore (booting from a Linux
host isn't reliable/working)
- we still run arCmd on that same solaris host just for the purpose
of emailing the "tail" of the log in a week-daily cron job. We
still have to start arCmd manually after each reboot of this machine
because it crashes immediately if we start it at boot time.
- for the longest time (this problem has now gone away) drvAscii had
to be compiled on solaris rather than Linux for some serial line devices
on some board architectures to work (most serial line devices
worked on most board architectures we use, but some just plain didn't)
- we tried earlier this week to connect an AllenBradley plc5 using
AbDf1 that was running off the second serial line on a hknitro60
to a terminal server to connect to a hkbaja4700E, and so far this
fell flat on its face (may be hardware, but we don't know that yet)
- we have different iocs running different versions of cfitsio that
include different things (running either of the versions on the
other ioc/application fails for one or the other reason)

I could probably find more of these, and IMHO the more (RT)OSs
we use the more of these we'll get - and the fewer people to ask.
