Is this a build issue that others have had on Solaris 9, or did I miss

Appologies about the default setting there. If you don't have readline
installed and you don't want to install it, you should be able to just
comment out the COMMANDLINE_LIBRARY setting in your file

<base>/configure/os/CONFIG_SITE.Common.solaris-sparc
The next release will default to this being commented out.
