Chris,

At CLS we have a Thales system. In our design we had Thales use a
Siemens S7/400 PLC. This was because we were integrating this into an
RF system with a supper conducting RF cavity where the process control
on the cavity and the low level RF was being done using Siemens PLC
hardware and there was a need for some data sharing between the three
systems. Profibus is used as the data network between the PLCs.

At the time we had the choice of using the design Thales had done with
the SLS using a VME/PowerPC based IOC instead of the PLC. For us with
the type of cavity and low level RF design we were planning the PLC
option was the best fit. If you are using a room temperature cavity and
have PowerPC based IOCs the SLS system may be a better fit for you.

We used a DIN rail mounted PC from Kontron (formally Pep Modular) that
contains a Profibus card (PC/104 form factor) to do the interface
between EPICS and the RF system.

If you would like additional information, Glen Wright wrote the Profibus
driver and Robby Tanner has done the PLC programming.

Has anyone had experience controlling a Thales transmitter for their RF
systems with EPICS? I understand that they can be ordered with emedded
PLCs that may have an Ethernet interface.
