Hi Ernest,

So the gcc version was not the issue, the problem was that I did not
have the readline-devel package installed on my linux system by default.
On my Fedora Core 1 system I had readline and readline-devel version
4.3.7 installed by default. On my Ubuntu (debian based) system I had
libreadline4 4.3-11 installed by default, after installing the
libreadline4-dev 4.3-11 package I was able to successfully build epics base.

I am not sure where to find information about a full list of
requirements to build on various platforms. I think it may just be
assumed that the readline and readline-devel packages are installed on
most Linux systems by default. But I am just guessing.

That is true especially for Red Hat.  I have not seen this problem.
Chip what flavor of Linux are you using?
I have tested the build on RH Enterprise Linux as well as Fedora Core
Release 3 with success
gcc version 3.4.2 20041017 (Red Hat 3.4.2-6.fc3)
