some much simpler considerations as well:

Is it possible to run two or more IOCs in a single VME crate? At present we're running MVV-177 IOCs running VxWorks, but are considering upgrading.

It is, providing you're careful.

and the crate is local. On a local crate you can of course push the reset button on each board if you want to hard reboot it. If you are far away from your crates (like us, where it's 30 miles) and you put them on remote access power switches to be able to hard boot (power cycle) remotely, those go by power plugs, not by IP addresses, so you can only hard boot the whole thing.

I'm not sure whether the one dual-IOC crate we had here at APS is still in that state, but we certainly have used that approach here in the past.

We sometimes do in the lab, otherwise only for multi-CPU applications (when you know you're only going to power cycle these together).
