Hello Martin,

On Diamond we looked at number of low-end low-cost PLC solutions for
interlocking etc. Eventually we selected the Omron CJ1, which is a modular
solution, very compact and very cost effective. We interface this using the
RS232 communication interface on the processor module, for which Paul
Hamadyk wrote protocol support using the ORNL Serial framework. 
This is one possible route, the alternative is to write you own comms
support  for the chosen device. We've found both ORNL Serial from John
Sinclair and Stream Device from Dirk Zimoch make writing comm. support
fairly straight forward.

Its worth noting that Marty Kraimer and others are working on a standardised
approach to asynchronous communication for  EPICS
http://www.aps.anl.gov/epics/modules/soft/asyn/index.html which is 3.14
based and is the future.
