This is not an EPICS related issue, but points to problems in your
general system configuration and/or design.
Nevertheless I will try to give you some hints:

You have two general options:

1) Running the edm on the Sun host, using your Linux system as an
   X-Terminal.

   a) Set the DISPLAY variable in your Sun window to point to your Linux
machine, usually this would be: <your_machine_name>:0.0
Allow applications on the Sun machine to connect to your X server by
setting "xhost +<sun_machine_name>" in a local Linux terminal window.

   b) A good and far more secure alternative would be using the Secure
Shell (ssh) to log onto the Sun and configure it to tunnel the X
connection. In that case you do not have to set the DISPLAY
manually nor to open up access to your X server for the Sun.

At that point you should be able to start X Clients (like edm) on the
Sun machine (a good test is running "xclock" which should pop up a
   clock on your screen).

2) Running the edm locally.

If you compile EPICS and the edm extension for Linux (or have your
EPICS administrators compile it and put it on the file server), you
can run edm locally on your Linux machine without logging onto the
   Sun server.

In that case (if your PATH contains the location of the Linux version
and the EPICS and edm libraries are in the right place) you can just
start edm in a local Linux window.

Your EPICS and system administrators should be able to tell you which of
these options is the one to use.

Also the man pages of the X and ssh programs contain a lot more detailed
information.

Hope this helps,
Ralph
